My Dad Colin Travis was in the 12th Armored Division, 572nd AA Battery D. I'm looking for veterans or members who may know of my Dad, or have photo's of Battery D 572nd AA. I'm also interested in finding out more details on my Dad's, and Battery D receiving the Certificate of Merit, Order #98 issued 9 August 1945.

Hello Marty, There is an excellent history of the 572nd on this website. On the left side, click on
BOOKS AND WRITTEN EXPERIENCES. Then
scroll down the Artillery and click on the Story of the Hell Tracks. You mention a General Order
number. There would be a citation describing how
the battalion won this award. Since your Dad has an award, there would be a general order for that
as well. We may have the General Orders; I will ask our historian
Bob Scherer if he has them.. It may exist in the National Archives in College Park, Maryland.

The 572nd was attached to the 12 for the whole
period of fighting from December through to the end of the war. This battalion often came to
national reunions and the men belonged to the
Association. I will check to see whether any veterans of the 572nd belong to the Association today.
The 572nd companies were dispersed to the headquarters of the Combat Commands A, B and R and also to the artillery battalion HQ.
of the 493rd, 494th and 495th HQ. So the
remaining veterans of these HQ would have
known men from the 572nd.
I will update you later on this. Mike Woldenberg

On the left side column, click on "2713 Photos"
Find the 572nd. There are some photos. There are
group photos, and the originals may be in the Museum.

I was surprised to see several barely readable pages
describing the concentration camp at Buchenwald.
I am going to get a better copy made for the Archives.
The 12th did not liberate Buchenwald. This report appears to be a description for visitors shortly after
the war.

I also discovered that the unit history has a roster of who the men were in each company while researching a fellow last night. Might further aid your research to know which company he was in.

Colin Travis was in Company B. Martin, I wonder if you
have already seen the Battalion History, since you
are a current member of the 572nd. I will look for
lapsed members of the 12th Armored Association whose
soldier was a member of B/ 572nd. They may have some pictures or stories. It is a long shot.

Hello Martin, Members of the 572nd did attend the
12th Armored Division Reunions, but I think they also
attended reunions of

572nd Anti Aircraft Artillery Association. They stopped meeting in 2006, apparently. Please go to Google and look them up.

I have two names of veteran members of the 572nd
who belonged to the 12th Armored Assn before they passed away. Perhaps their families can be reached.
I can send these to you. Somehow you have to ask
for a roster of members or names of active members
whose families may know of people from B Company.
