My grandfathers name was John Daniel Williams and he was from Pennsylvania. He served in the 572nd Air Warn Bat Battery B. He passed away in 1999 and I was wondering if anyone had pictures or stories theyd like to share. Thanks!

Hello, The 572nd was attached to the 12th Armored
Division in France on Dec. 4, 1944 and detached on May 18, 1945. See their unit history. On the left side of this page, click on BOOKS AND WRITTEN EXPERIENCES. Scroll down to the 572nd history.
I was surprised to learn that there were over 700 members of this battalion. (The division had about
10, 500 men). The 572nd had companies attached to each Combat Command of the 12th: A, B and R.
In addition there was a battalion attached to Division HQ. They had a good record of shooting down German planes. In addition they protected the bridgehead across the Danube at Dillingen. I
believe they shot down 6 German planes attempting to bring down the bridge.

The 572nd had a separate organization and a separate newsletter. Often a few of these men also attended 12th Armored reunions. Maybe you will be able to locate their newsletters. I have not yet found specific references to your grandfather in the old Hellcat News or in scrapbooks. I will look
further. Mike Woldenberg

I forgot to mention that your grandfather's name was
on the roster of the 572nd in the book on our website.
