Looking for information or anyone who may have know Marius Centoz. His discharge noted CO A, 56th Armored Infantry BN as his final unit. He serviced in Tunisia and Italy before being assigned to the 56th. We believe he was on a Quad 50 gun crew. He recently passed away at age 102 in Arizona. His daughters are trying to rebuild his Army service record for WWII. Prior to WWII, he was in the NY National Guard. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ralph W. US Army V/N

Hello Ralph,
Harry Dahns is indeed correct. Mike Woldenberg is our resident expert on the 56th and can provide you the best information on that Battalion. There are two organizations that serve veterans of the 12th AD. The 12th AD Memorial Museum which preserves the Division's history and is the proponent of this website. The 12th AD Association is the organization that maintains the comradery between members, publishes a monthly newsletter and conducts the annual reunions. We will have our 72nd next July. Please contact me vis email - rwscherer@verizon.net. I will do my best to help Marius' daughters reconstruct their dad's record and assist in any other way I can if I can including finding the best way to preserve Marius' awards. I found a partial obituary for Marius indicating he died in August 2013. We would like a copy of that obituary to publish in our monthly pub. Thank you for helping to take care of a Hellcat. Hello Ralph,
My name is Mike Woldenberg, and I have
temporarily forgotten my password for this site! emai: geomike@buffalo.edu
Apparently Marius Centoz was born in 1911. He was in the National Guard
before the war, was among the troops to be sent to the Mediterranean, perhaps as early
as November, 1942. He was in Tunisia and Italy and perhaps saw fighting in both of these assignments. I would not be surprised if he had
been part of the invasion of southern France on August 15, 1944. He may have been reassigned to the 56th sometime in late December, or perhaps later when the 56th took heavy casualties in Herrlisheim
north of Strasburg in January, 1945.
My uncle, Lt. Chuck Willis had the very same itinerary.

As a result of his age, length of service, prescnce in the Mediterranean and North African campaigns as well as France and Germany and possible extended periods of combat, he earned extra points leading to his being sent back to the USA rather quickly after the war ended. I read an article in the Hellcat News from the summer of 1945 that mentioned that he was a "high point man," and would be sent home in the first wave of returning veterans.
I also learned that he was a member of the 12th Armored Association for a time, beginning in the 1980s.
I checked a History of the 56th (see BOOKS AND WRITTEN EXPERIENCES on this website) and could not find his name listed among those who were wounded or who earned medals. (That list is incomplete, as the
handwritten History stops in July, 1945.

I have seen references to him as being in Co. A, and also in Co. C. One of these may be incorrect. Ed Pierce does not believe he was in Co. A.

Do you know if he was wounded or earned a medal while with the 12th ARmored?

Do you have any documents relating to his service?

It is likely that Marius Centoz was very valuable because of his earlier combat experience.

Hello Ralph, et al., I have found references to Marius
Centoz in 4 old Hellcat News issues from the 1980s. In one of these, the unit Rep identified him as being from C-56.

I have a special roster of all men who were in one of the three Armored Infantry Battalions and he was listed as being with C-56. His address at that time was Tempe Arizona. (He or his wife had to move to
Arizona for health reasons). If his discharge papers or other papers indicate A-56, then this may have been his last assignment, or it may be that there was a clerical error.

Mike
