Can anyone share information with me about my father, 1st Lt. Burton Elijah Howard, a tank commander in the 12th Armored Division who was killed in Manila in February 1945. Any information about him would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Merry Sue. My name is Bob Scherer and I'm the historian for the 12th Armored Division Association. I'm sorry to say I have no information at hand on your Dad, but I have emailed the three men who might be able to provide you information. I believe your Dad would have been in the 44th Tank Battalion since he served in the Pacific. The 44th was originally a part of the 12th, but got detached and sent to the Pacific before the Division went to Europe. The 44th is still part of our family and Geoff Lackey is the unit representative. I see you are from Abilene and hope you have visited the 12th AD Museum there. Harry Dhans is a volunteer member of the Museum staff and may be the best guy to help you. I've also sent this to Mike Woldenberg. Mike is also one of the most knowledgeable people on the history of the Division. I hope one of them can help you. We will be having the 71st Annual Reunion of the 12th AD Association in Abilene in July. I encourage you to join us for this historic event and also invite you to join our Association. Please email me at rwscherer@verizon.net and I can send you more information and will work to find more info on your Dad. Thanks for writing to us! Bob

Lt. Burton E. Howard of "B" Company was killed in action during the fighting around the High Commissioner's Residence. Previously wounded, when a shell landed at his feet, failed to explode, and hit him in the leg, he left the hospital before complete recovery knowing there was a shortage of officers, and that he was needed. His devotion to duty resulted in his paying the supreme sacrifice.
