My wife and I will be visiting the museum on Fri April 7th, her father served with 117th Battalion, HQ Company PFC. Francis McAneny for South Philly.

Have read quite a bit about his company, hard to tell exactly where he was involved since most records follow Companies A,B and C. I understand that HQ members augmented some companies or Battle Commands. Any way to find out more info?

Hello, Frances McAneny served with the 17th Armored Infantry Battalion, HQ co..
(You have a typo in your message).

As a first step, click on BOOKS AND WRITTEN EXPERIENCES on the left side of this page.
Scroll down to the several memoirs about the 17th, especially those written by George Hatt. Also read
article on left side of page: DEATH OF AN AMERICAN COMBAT COMMAND.

When you go to the Museum, be sure you see the
display relating to the Battle of Herrlisheim and pay
close attention to the battle around the Steinwald
woods. There are several wonderful people there and one will be able guide you around the museum.

See the message preceding yours. Nina Donath's
father was also in 17 HQ. Perhaps she can give
you some background that I missed.
I have communicated with her in the past.
She will visit Herrlisheim soon.

Go to ORAL HISTORY VIDEOS (left side of this
page). Click on the column that says COMPANY.
This sorts all men who were in A, B, C or HQ or Service, companies. Now go to page 13 and 14.
There you will find 4 veterans from 17-HQ who
gave interviews. They might well tell you some
interesting stories about their time at the front,
including Herrlisheim.
