Bernard E McGarry Youngstown Ohio

I was wondering if someone could help me locate exact records of his tour.

I was told he was a SGT in a tank 12th armored.

He was my father.

Hello, Chris, Do you have your father's discharge
documents? It will have his battalion and his
Army serial number. Do you have any names of his fellow soldiers in letters or on the backs of photos?
The 17,000 roster does not have you Dad's name,
but this roster is not complete.

There were 3 tank battalions: 23rd, 43rd and 714th.
in addition the 92nd Recon Battalion had quite a few tanks. There were also a few tanks in other battalions. Thus we need some more information.

A few other rosters exist for battalions, but not all battalions have easily accessible rosters.

If this does not work, there are other things to try.

I don't have any of his discharge papers or any old photos of him with his fellow soldiers. He did have a tattoo that looked just like the 92nd emblem and I asked him about his tattoo several times but, he always just told me it meant he was young and stupid. Thank you, I appreciate any information you can provide me.

Hello Chris, Can you refer me to a picture resembling the tattoo that you saw?

Also, I checked the PORTAL TO TEXAS HISTORY
accessed through the Hellcat News Archive,
just to the left of the screen. I found references to
Thomas McGarry only.

Chris, Can you please look at BOOKS AND WRITTEN EXPERIENCES to the left:
Scroll down to the 92nd Cavalry Recon. Open up the Squadron History. On page 1 is the symbol
for the 92nd Recon; Is this the tatoo design?

OK, So at some point he must have been with
the 92nd Recon. I did check for his name because
there is a roster for each Company (called a
"Troop.") I will go look again, but I did not see his
name. Note that there were men who were transferred
from one Battalion to another. This could have been
because of large loses , especially in January, 1945
by the tank battalions). So he might have gotten his tattoos in the U.S. during training, and then transferred in January to another battalion for instance.

I will look again.

I meant to say there is a roster for each Troop in
the book on the 92nd Recon in
BOOKS AND WRITTEN EXPERIENCES.

I searched History of 92nd and roster of 92nd and found no mention of him.
Scroll down and find my post on how to get DD 214. That will give you much info. Also can ask about any medals.
Perhaps he lost a bet and had to get the tattoo.
I will keep looking!

his tombstone just says SGT. and no outfit. His enlistment record may have perished in the fire.

Thank you for all of your help, I really appreciate it. After he died I did find his sketch book from the 12th Armored Division that he had all those years but never shared it with anyone and I have only one photo of him in his uniform and all I can see on the uniform is a tank pin on his cap and the photo is dated March of 1943. Thanks again for everything.

Chris,
Hello. I see you live in Bristol. I'm in Yardley. Perhaps we can get together and I can look at what you have from your Dad. I may be able to shed some light on your search. Please email me at rwscherer@verizon.net.
