My father was the Park Ranger at the park in the early 1940's. I was very young but I remember the soldiers that would come to the come to the park to swim and R&R. I would like to hear from any vets that remember coming to the park. My older sister was the life guard at the pool and she saved the life of a soldier that dove into the pool and hit his head. When she got him out of the pool he was not breathing. She gave him artificial respiration and he came too. I know it is a long shot but I wonder if any one remembers the incident and the identy of the soldier.

All of the history they have on this incident came from me or someone else in the family. The soldier's name is what I would like to find out. My sister knew his name but she is no longer alive. My father was L.T. Harris.

What was the Life Gurad's name (first and last names)?

When was the rescue made? (The date would help).

Then check the Hell Cat News Archives on this
website.

In a recent interview LuDell Cox, a longtime resident of Abilene, shared a story that was not her own but that of a longtime friend, Jolene "Dusty" Harris.

In 1944 Dusty, then 13, was a lifeguard at the park's pool -- that in itself is an unusual historical footnote. Through gutsy determination she saved the life of a Camp Barkeley soldier who nearly drowned because others had given up.
