I am seeking information about George L. Schumaker who was an assistant .30 caliber machine gunner for my wife's cousin John E. Fuchs. Both were killed just north of the Steinwald Forest and south of Herrlisheim, France in January of 1945 when they were hit by an 88mm shell. Any information would be greatly appreciated

Hello, A good description of the fighting is given by George Hatt of 17-A. Go to BOOKS AND WRITTEN EXPERIENCES.
Scroll down to the 17 Armored Infantry Battalion. Select
HERRLISHEIM STORY by George Hatt. The details surrounding the deaths of George Schumaker and John Fuchs are given on pages 5 and 6 (at the bottom) or 6 or 7
(as read from the top of the screen).
I have a feeling you know about this quotation. This document is remarkable in its detailed description.

See also the other articleS by Hatt. "17h AIB Historical Information" and see "Journal of Operations of the 17th AIB." See DEATH OF AN AMERICAN COMBAT COMMAND in the column to the left.

Finally, go to the left column again, and find: ORAL HISTORY VIDEOS. Click on Battalion at the top of that
battalion column. This sorts the battalions together. Then
find men from the 17th, and look for Company A.

Please contact me from my email address above and I will look for survivors from A- 17.

Hello, I found out that George's brother, Lawrence
Schumaker asked for and received information about
his brother in 1990. This information was in the
Hellcat News. Perhaps Lawrence or his family has
some old letters or information received from 3
people who knew George. One of these men may be living.
