Hi, I continue to do research on my dad's service in the 12th (William E. Woody, HQ/17). Shortly after he finished Basic Training at Camp Hood, he was sent to LSU to take examinations for the ASTP program. He wrote a letter to his mother there that sorry he couldn't write from Camp Hood, but three of them had been shipped out to a S.T.A.R.S. unit and he was now at LSU. The return address of the envelope has Co D S.T.A.R.S. Unit #3803. Does anyone know what a S.T.A.R.S unit means? I cannot find any info on the web. Thank you!

Special Tactics and Rescue Service?

I like Harry's answer. He is probably right.

Thank you for your responses!
I am making a goal to go to the National Archives sometime in 2015 to endeavor to learn even more information about where he might have been.
Happy Holidays to you both,
Nina

The STAR testing units were places where soldiers could take advanced tests to join the army specialized training program(ASTP). There is a lot of information about the program and tests in a book called "Scholars in Foxholes"

STARS (Specialized Training and Reassignment Units) were units intermediate between troop units and the ASTP units in the colleges, set up for the processing and storage of ASTP candidates.

Nina,
I've made a few trips to the National Archives in College Park, MD and the National Personnel Records Center in St Louis. If you'd like any information on my experiences visiting those facilities, please contact me. rwscherer@verizon.net
Good luck! Bob Scherer
