Hi, Carlin P. Deibel(*Name spelled incorrectly on the roster of 17,000 members...should be D-E-I, not D-I-E) was my grandfather and served as a half-track driver in WWII with the 12th. I currently live in Europe and I am hoping to retrace some steps of where he was at various points. I've been pouring over the site looking for any details I can find, and hoping I can come across some good "footstep tracking" in my future as I travel around Europe.

My first order of business...I'm going to be in the Marseille area the end of May, which is where he shipped out from. The date, I know was Nov 22, 1945. I'd love to know if there's anything else around the Marseille area about the 12th...I believe he may have been bivouacked just outside Marseille awaiting discharged and would love to visit there as well. Any photos I can acquire of modern day 12th Armored locations will be passed along! Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

no information yet.
I just watched your 2008 blog. Very good job and great diary. I must have missed you at the Museum. I volunteer there and have much material to look through. If it is here I will find it and post for you.

Hello again Seth. Go to BOOKS AND WRITTEN
EXPERIENCES. Find the History of the 56th AIB
by Lapic and Hale. At the end is a list of
all the locations of HQ of the 56th.
See also the book by Marvel Rowland. See the
book by John Nugent. Also read THE INITIAL ASSAULT ON HERRLISHEIM BY THE 56TH AIB AND THE 714TH TANK BATTALION.

With regard to Marseille. Enter Google and
type: Cigarette Camp and Marseille. The
Cigarette camps were places where the troops
spent time before leaving for the USA.
There must have been one in Marseille. There
were such camps in Le Havre.
