Hello, for a brief description of the battle
on March 22 and 23d, 1945, put this into
Google:

After action report, 714th Tank Battalion, 11 Dec 44 - 27 Aug 45. Click on DOWNLOAD.
Then go to page 105,106 and 107. The 714th
was fighting in Mutterstadt, and then moved
on Speyer, a key city on the Rhine, on
March 23. The bridge was blown up before
the 92nd Recon and the 56th Armored Infantry Battalion and the
714th other units could capture it and take the city.
It was a tough battle. A few pages later
you will see a summary of the men killed and
wounded. Hubert Barnes was one of these, and his Army Identification number was given.

This will get you started. I will add some
more comments later.

I would like very much to get the remaining three pictures. I got the first one of the group. Thanks! This is for a local history project. There is a scholarship given out every year at the local high school in Mr. Barnes's name. I thought it would be nice for people to learn about him.

Hello, I checked the American Battle Monuments Commission website. Hubert Barnes is listed there. His Army Serial
Number is given. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

It indicates that he was missing and his date of death is March 22nd, 1945. My uncle is buried in this cemetery.
His grave site is listed on the same website. Hubert Barnes was evidently missing, so his name is written on a wall with the missing who are presumed to have died.

If he was actually killed in battle on March 22nd, I can
find the approximate location. I will check, but I am guessing that he was killed somewhere north of
Speyer, a German city on the Rhine. I will check.

Hubert Barnes was in Company A of the 714th. . He was probably killed in Mutterstadt on March 22d. He was listed in the After Action Report for the 714th Tank Battalion. See
my instructions on how to find it in an earlier message.

I can put you in touch with the Unit Representative who
will find a veteran of A company who might have known
Hubert Barnes.

I am an Army journalist in Maryland, writing about Sgt. Barnes and his platoon leader, Vernon Foster. If you still want details, Vernon is alive in living near Baltimore and could likely give you details. I can be reached at (410) 278-1150.
