Great site!

We're looking for info on my Grandfather's service in Europe towards the end of WWII, but don't have much to go on. We have a group photo that he is in taken at Fort Knox, KY, in April 1944, labeled "Co. A, 12th Armored Replacement Battalion".

What did the "replacement battalion" mean? My mother says all he ever told her was that he worked on tanks. We have a picture of him standing with three other soldiers on a Sherman tank and they look like the crew, he has coveralls on and a pair of goggles, kind of looks like a driver, but not sure. Can anyone help me with any info? It would be greatly appreciated.

If there's some way to post the photos, I'd be glad to. We also have a Christmas Card from the 82nd Recon, 2nd Armored, don't know if he sent that home to my Grandmother or if someone else sent that to him. My great Uncle was also in recon, he went ashore at Omaha Beach sometime after D-Day, so he may have sent that home, not really sure.

We're just trying to piece together where he was and what he did, since he never would talk about it.

Thanks, Randy

Thank you,

Randy

hello - I found a listing for the Replacement Battalion. They trained here and then were deployed. Usually to a Replacement Depot overseas. Then whoever needed that type of trained person, requested them. I will keep looking. If you would email the pictures to me, I will accession them at the Museum. dhali44@cs.com

Hello, The 2nd Armored Division landed in Normandy on June 9th, 1944. August "Laddie" Skopek is not on our rosters. However, they are incomplete.

Assume he was a member of the 12th ARmored. He probably was trained in Kentucky in the Replacement Battalion. He would have been sent to
a replacement depot in Europe and then sent to the 12th from there. My best guess is that he would have been
sent to the 134th Armored Ordnance Battalion. This is the battalion that repaired tanks. Please contact Ken Klinedinst,
the Unit Representative to the Hellcat News. He may be able to help, perhaps by placing a notice in the Hellcat News.
