I need some help looking for info on my grandfather John Jay McCord service number 39900473. He was in the 17th armored inf bn. That is all know. I have a paper he brought home dated 2 Feb 1945. It a list of those who were awarded the combat infantrymans badge.

Hi Nathan,

Please contact the Unit Representative to the Hellcat News,

Bill Funke: (970) 482 0255.
fwilliam46@Msn.com

Bill is a veteran and may be able to help you.
The (incomplete) 17,000 Men Roster on the left does not have your grandfather's name,
but there are other rosters. There are books on our website about the 17th. To start, read the one by George Hatt. Then read the book MOUNT UP.

I will look around for your grandfather's name and see if we can narrow down his company (A,B,C,D, HQ).

One more thing: Please make a copy of the list of the Combat Infantryman Awards and
mail a copy to

Bill Lenches
12th Armored Museum
1289 N. 2nd St.,
Abilene, Texas 79601.

Thank you.

Nathan, When was your grandfather discharged?
If he was made a captain during combat, or
even made a lieutenant during combat, this will help finding men who knew him. I might add that the 17th took very heavy casualties in January, 1945 in Herrlisheim. Some platoons were almost wiped out. This might
explain why he was promoted with a battle field commission. Was your grandfather
wounded?

You should have heard from Bill Funke by now.

I found a little more info. He was inducted at fort douglas UT nov 3 1943. He's promotions were pfc in jan 1943, and captain may of 1945. He had accident in April 16 1945 from shrapnel in face from panzerfaust. Was mustered out on jan 20 1946 at fort Douglas.

Nathan, Can you find the name of his Company,

either A, B, C, D, or Headquarters (HQ)

It could be in this form:

"McCord, 17 B" etc.

Mike, in my grandfathers diary he said he was with the A company. My uncle told me that my grandfather was at the battle of the bulge. His group was the next ones up to fight but the group in font of them was able to make good progress, so he lucked out not to fight. My uncle all so said one time he was with my grandfather in Idaho falls Idaho shopping when a man walked up to them and said "Have you forgotten?" and my grandfather said no. Than the man walked off. My uncle ask who he was and he said I serviced with him in the army.

Hi Nathan, Your grandfather was in A company and then
HQ. He wrote a diary. Are there any names of soldiers,
in the diary? Any names of towns in France or Germany?
