This is my grandfather and I wanted to know more of his time in WWII. He would never really talk about it, especially since he passed away when I was 18 years old. He must have felt my brother and I were too young to hear his stories. I have a general idea based on an interview he gave in a local newspaper, but even that didn't give much detail. I do know he was captured and a POW in 1945. If anyone has any information, or may know him, please contact me. Thank you.

Dear Susan, After you search PICTORIAL HISTORY
of the 493d ARMORED FIELD ARTILLERY, for information on John Carlson, get in touch
with the Unit Representative to the Hellcat News. Marvin Bertelson

(408) 739 5958.

Marvin can put a note in the Hellcat News.
Also, you might ask him for names of men from
Headquarters Company (John Carlson's Company). My list of names is not up to date.

I am pretty sure that the 493d was in Combat
Command A, along with the 17th Armored Infantry Battalion and the 23d Tank Battalion. So read the Books that relate to
these battalions. I will get back to this
message with some suggestions.

Here are references to activities of the
17th Armored Infantry Battalion. You will
find general comments there about the 493d
Field Artillery. (I hope).

Go to
BOOKS AND WRITTEN EXPERIENCES (on the left of
this screen). Read 17th Armored Historical
Information by F. George Hatt. Also read the
following:

Journal of Operatios of the 17th AIB

Mount Up: The History of Company C

Nightmare in Herrlisheim

World War 2 experiences of Carl Lyons

World War 2 Magazine

Also the first 2 or 3 books at the head of the list.

Also, consult ORAL HISTORY VIDEOS, and
click on Battalion. Search for B Company.

Yours truly,
Mike Woldenberg

my father, Orville E. Cook, was with the 493 ArmFd Art Bat HQ Battery (1st Sgt.) He is not doing so well these days (nearing 93) but will be delighted to know there are still youngsters out there who care what his generation did nearly 70 years ago.
