posted 11/14/2011 8:49:43 PM Hello, Stephen F. Vitanovitz was a member of Co. C., 66th Armored Infantry Battalion. He was killed on Jan. 16 in a field next to the Steinwald (a woods), near Herrlisheim, not far from Strassburg. It was the worst day of the war for the 66th, and in fact for the whole Division. See the article in the column on the left: Death of An American Combat Command.
48 men from C-66 were killed that day, and 49 were POWs and 17 were wounded. I got this information from the book C-66 by Emery. The book is on sale at the Museum, see address above. Also look at the Oral History videos for C-66. You may want to contact some veterans. If so, get in touch with me: Mike Woldenberg, geomike@buffalo.edu
