posted 11/6/2011 8:46:50 AM Trevor, Clarence Abney was in Company B of the 56th. (The 17,000 Man Roster on this list is in error). Clarence Abney was killed in the vicinity of Herrlisheim, not far from Strssburg. Here are some things to look up from our website: Go to BOOKS AND WRITTEN EXPERIENCES: Scroll down to near the bottom and read the item called: 56th Armored Infantry Battalion by John Nugent. There are many sections of this long book by men from Company B. Clarence may be mentioned. I am not sure, but there may be a way to search for his name. Also read: HISTORY OF THE 56TH ARMORED INFANTRY BATTALION ( a different booklet; mainly a diary recounting where the men were on different days, and who was wounded and killed on different days, and who received medals, etc.)
Also, for general background, read "The Initial Assault on Herrlisheim by the 56th AIB and the 714th Tank Battalion." Also read the DEATH OF A COMBAT COMMAND (see column on left of this page).
Go to Oral History Videos and look for men from B- 56.
Finally, please contact the Unit Rep to the Hellcat News: Ed Pierce,
