I am Susan Crowder daughter of William
Bucky Jones. He was part of the 493rd
division. He was my dad. He was a medic.
I recently found in our attic the most
beautiful picture of Hildesheim,Germany.
I can barely read the name of the town on
the picture. I hope it is Hildesheim.
I am going to Germany in the spring. If
the 12th armored division was at Hildesheim
I want to see the town because I think my
dad was stationed there at a make shift
hospital. Hope you can help me with this
mystery.
Thanks

Susan Crowder

Dear Susan, I will look, but may not be the right person
to ask. Apparently the postcard was sent after the war in
Europe ended. Can you give me the date of the post
mark? This may be helpful in search.

Dear Susan, Sorry for the mistake. I did not read
your message carefully. You have a picture of
Hildesheim. I am checking out your question. The
12th Armored Division crossed the Rhine at Worms
on about March 28th.
Note that Hildesheim is east and north of Worms. Hildesheim is just south of Hannover. The 493d went
through Wurzburg on April 3d. April 18, by passed
Nurnberg. This city is well south of Hildesheim. The
493 continued east, and then due south to Dillingen where they crossed the Danube in late April.
I conclude that the Division and the 493 were well south
of Hildesheim. I will send you the email address of the unit representative to the Hellcat News.
Yours truly, Mike Woldenberg

Dear Mike,
Thank you for your quick reply. I looked
at my picture closely. I think the name of
the town is HERRLISHEIM. Did the division go
to that town. Where is it! In the picture
it has a castle or a church on a hill above
the town. I would love to know the name of
the castle or church so I can visit it on
my trip in honor of my dad.

Susan

Dear Susan, HOLY COW! Herrlisheim was the toughest
battle faced by the 12th Armored. Terrible losses. You can learn something about it quickly by reading
DEATH OF AN AMERICAN COMBAT COMMAND in the column to the left. After that, look at what the various unit memoirs
have to say about it. They will all describe it. Start with the 493d. See also: Brendan Phibbs OUR WAR FOR THE WORLD.
(Still available on the web, cost about 13 dollars or so.
There will be a new book just on Herrlisheim:

CROSSING THE ZORN to be released in January or so.
Yours truly, Mike Woldenberg

Susan. There are 2 Herrlisheims. The one that had the terrible battle is the one
near Strassburg. The other one is near Colmar. The
12th Armored fought there as well, but the battle was
less intense there.

I have just seen your post. My Dad James Marmion was with the 493rd also. He often spoke of a beautiful town Heidelberg, with a castle on a hill. I have photos. I believe the 493rd was there at the end of the War. I have sent you an email...is it possible this is the Town ?
