Sgt. Robert E Entwisle was my uncle. I never met him as he was KIA around or about Herrlisheim, I believe on the 17th or 18th of Jan. 1945. Though his memorial at Epilan, France states his date of death as 01/18/1946. I was born in 1951 & named after him. I have the letter that was sent to my Grandmother stating that his tank had taken a direct hit. He was in the 23rd Tank Battalion. I do not know which Company. I also have his trunk & some other personal items & a map.
I have read the battle accounts on these pages, The detail is overwhelming. I know this is rather late in life to ask but does anyone recall him or what actually happened?
His 2 brothers, (1 was my dad), & my other uncle have passed away so information is hard to come by. They were both over there too. But not in this area. In fact after Bob's death my other uncle was sent home. This web site is GREAT. Thank you so much.

Hi Bob,
I am a Legacy member of the 12th Armored Division Association, I will try to answer your questions.

You said, “Though his memorial at Epilan, France states his date of death as 01/18/1946” it also states he was FOD, “Finding of Death, Judged to be dead as a result of Finding Death. An administrative decision necessary due to the non-recoverability of remains”,
This finding supports “his tank had taken a direct hit”. The date 1/18/1946 is significant, because that is when he most likely was removed from the MIA list to FOD

This link, copy and paste, will take you to his enlistment record; if you need it deciphered let me know.

He volunteered; he was not drafted, Oct. 16, 1942
This is a list of Veteran’s, the unit reps are for the 23rd TB, they can help.

Keep in touch.

Ken,
Thank you so much, I never thought I could get any information on him, other than what my father had told me, years ago.
I also checked the other "Entwisle"'s on the list. I do not see my father, Thomas J. Entwisle, or my other uncle, Jene M. Entwisle. After my father passed away in '81 we could not get much information on him as I was told at the time there had been a fire & a lot of the Army records had been destroyed. That is why I never pursued this matter any further.
Again, thanks, I do appreciate your very quick response
sincerely,
Bob Entwisle
