My grandfather's name is William W. Carlin. I believe that he was a part of the 56th Battalion. I was just wanting to know some information about him and his life in the army if anyone could help me please.
Thank you. my email is caitmden@nmsu.edu

Dear Caitlin, Perhaps the best approach might be to
contact the Unit Representative for the 56th to the Hellcat News. Otis Shull can ask the members for information and he can put you in touch with a knowledgeable person,
hopefully.

Ogsjss@aol.com

I am looking through a History of the 56th to see if the name
of your grandfather shows up.

Dear Caitlin, I found the following information:

1st Lt. William W. Carlin O1 300 126 Inf. awarded the
"Bronze Star" Auth: Sec IV, GO 11, Headquarters,
12th Armored Division, 26 January 1945.

The GO 11 (general orders number ) may be missing from the
file at the National Archives in College Park Maryland.
I couldn't find it.

This was awarded in late January after the battle at Herrlisheim. The 12th Armored had a deadly battle there.

Yours truly, Mike Woldenberg geomike@buffalo.edu
