Hi Katie,

I am a Legacy Member of the 12th AD Association. Your grandfather was in this unit.
[Ernest L Sprague 56 Pendlaton St Brewer ME 134th Ord Maint Bat CO A.]

Contact the unit rep, WW2 vet, Don Hering 262-547-0610. Don may be able give you more info. Point to remember a CO had about 290 men, a battalion had close to a 1000 men.

Is your granddad alive? Do you or your family have any of his army records?

Regards,

Ken

Ken-
In response to your post. I do have a few millitary records, a journal, and very little passed down info by mouth to my father/mother. My grandfather isnot alive, and unfortuanlty he passed before i was even born from colon cancer, Actually on Febuary 16th of 1982 or 83? don't know exact yr off top of head. My grandmother also passed about several years ago and knew very little of what to ask until I found certain possession I was interested in when we cleaned out her house. I'll get back to you with some more specifics as soon as I can acquire them. My biggest question is on a mission that has very little info only from his journal. I can not find any info on who, what, where and why. He supposidly was suppose to be take a girl from munich to sofia bulgaria-i believe during/around the time liberation? she went by pepi or pepei probably about 12 ish. he lost her then found her, thought these nazi spys had figured him out, and was shot during that time. There are no specific dates or specific details on the girl and the only thing i can figure is perhaps she was someone of importance. (possibly Marie-louisa princess of bulgaria?) My mom has seen a picture as a child of pepi and the feew pictures i can find on the internet of the princess she says look very close to the girl. I know he was present during liberation of kaufering camp at dachau. There are discrepancies also on dates and places in is journal compared to what was going on as far as the battalion/division. Also i can not find any info on his purple heart award. I know some info is missing do to the archives fire. So I was hoping maybe someone who served with him would still be alive to help me shed some light on the situation or that somebody perhaps has some info they left beind. Thanks-kate

Dear Kate, I believe the 134th Ordinance Maintenance Battalion was composed of employees of International Harvester. These men were trained mechanics before the war.
(This might come in handy on a long overland trip in car or jeep from Munich to Bulgaria).

I think another key to finding something more about this mystery is to try and find something about the princess "Pepi" and her family. I don't recall whether Ken told you
to contact Don Hering, (262) 547 - 0610.
Don can put an announcement in the Hellcat News. Also, contact me if you want a Roster of members of A company of the 134th.

Dear Katie, I just used Google to trace

"Maria Louisa of Bulgaria" I found that the first website that comes up indicates that
she is alive. This is a charity and she
is one of the sponsors. There must be a
way to send a letter to the charity and they
will eventually forward this letter to her.

If this is indeed the person your grandfather helped, she should be thrilled
to hear from you.

Yours truly, Mike Woldenberg

Hi Kattie,

Here is the story

I think it you should contact her. If want I'll try to locate an address for you

Ken

Princess Maria Louise (Bulgarian: Мария Луиза) (born January 13, 1933, Sofia) is the daughter of Tsar Boris III and Tsaritsa Ioanna and the older sister of Simeon II of Bulgaria.

After the abolition of the monarchy in 1946, Princess Maria Louise left the country with her mother and brother. They first lived in Egypt and then moved to Spain. She married Karl, Prince of Leiningen in a civil ceremony on 14 February 1957 in Amorbach and in a religious ceremony on 20 February 1957 in Cannes. The couple had two sons:

Boris (born 1960)
Hermann (born 1963)
Karl and Maria Luisa divorced in 1968.

On November 16, 1969 married Bronislaw Chrobok in Toronto, Canada. They currently live in Madison, New Jersey and have a daughter and a son:

Alexandra Nadejda (born 1970)
Pavel (born 1972)
Princess Maria-Louise is a member of the Board of Trustees of the American University in Bulgaria.

Ken and mike-
I want to thank you both for all the hard work you both have been doing and the great info you have come up with. I did know that she is alive and living in New Jesrey. She is on the board of trustees for the bulgarian college. We are going to attempt to write a letter to few places of possible contact. Who knows this could be a complete shot in the dark. Are there any records of missions such as these???? My ma states that my grandpa was a truck driver for a water truck and milk truck prior to enlistment (not much mechanic skills except high school auto) which corresponds to his enlistment record that ken posted...however, one discrepancy is that they have him as ethnicity=negro. My grandfather was causcasian. But this is among many other discrepacies in his records. Everything else lines up on the enlistment records though. We do have his DD214 you were asking about, but it does not state his actual divisions/battlions and companies etc which he was enrolled throughout his time in the service... only metals and a few places like thailand (after WWII). Mike I would love a 134th battalion enrollment list and a soon as this week calms down a bit from midterms I will get ahold of don. I did attempt several years ago and was unsuccessful in getting ahold of him. I understand there are some issues with finding purple heart info. I think he was shot on this specific "pepi" mission so my guess is that is why he recieved the heart...i thought any record from this metal might help solve the mystery....but i know there is no list of receipients, does the governement have this info in there files???? I'll keep you updated...once again thank you so much-kate

Dear Katie, Each Battalion kept a record of the wounded and killed, and a list of medals awarded, by date. I found a kind of diary for the 56th Armored Infantry Battalion, in the
National Archives at College Park. The information would
be simply a statement that so and so was awarded a
Purple Heart and the date. There would be no story attached.
